Quarrying in Menorca BGM 129 1 2 Art 14 1

The island of Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) contains numerous megalithic structures (e.g., watchtowers, sanctuaries) and private buildings (e.g., domestic spaces, storage areas). Until recently, archaeological research has concentrated on architecture (and associated material remains), but research on the raw materials (source, method of quarrying and their social implications) in constructing these monuments has been very sparse. This paper summarizes some initial results of our recent excavations at Torre d’en Galmés, which show that the quarrying of limestone was widespread: within…

The Hirbemerdon Tepe Archaeological Project was initiated in 2003 as part of a broader cultural heritage rescue project associated with the construction of the Ilısu Dam and planned as part of a scientific collaboration between the University of Catania, the Istituto per l’Africa e l’Oriente and the Archaeological Museum of Dıyarbakir. The site is located on the western bank of the Tigris river about 100 km southeast of the modern city of Dıyarbakir. During the 10 years of archaeological work performed at the site 11 archaeological phases were recorded starting from the fourth millennium BC…

Building Monuments – Creating Communities. Early monumental architecture at Pre-Pottery Neolithic Göbekli Tepe.

The meaning of monumental buildings as an indicator of social complexity and the visible expression of power and authority has been a lasting topos in the field of archaeology. Now new evidence is coming from southeastern Turkey, showing that the origins of monumental architecture have to be sought as early as with the hunter‑gatherer groups at the end of the last Ice Age in the Near East twelve thousand years ago. At Göbekli Tepe, monumental, monolithic T‑shaped pillars were erected by mobile groups of the Early Neolithic constituting large circular enclosures and indicating a degree of…

The Dynamics of Death: Ancestors, Pastoralism, and the Origins of a Third-Millennium City in Syria. 2002. BASOR 325: 1-36

The rituals and practices associated with death are significant sources of social relationships beyond only issues of status. In the ancient Near East, mortuary practices created ancestors, evident both archaeologically and textually, and ancestors were intimately tied to social structures that shaped both the nature fo the social group and its history. This paper focuses on the third millennium settlement complex of Tell Banat, on the left bank of the Euphrates river, Syria. Mortuary practices there included multistage burials in which acts such as the disarticulation of skeletal remains…
