The paper examines the siege scenes of Kaiemheset and Inti of the Old Kingdom, considering the socio-historical context behind the scenes’ appearance in the repertoire of funerary wall scenes and assessing the treatment of foreigners, namely the Early Bronze Age Asiatics.

BECOMING GENDERED IN EUROPEAN PREHISTORY: WAS NEOLITHIC GENDER FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT

It is notable how little gender archaeology has been written for the European Neolithic, in contrast to the following Bronze Age. We cannot blame this absence on a lack of empirical data or on archaeologists’ theoretical naïveté. Instead, we argue that this absence reflects the fact that gender in this period was qualitatively different in form from the types of gender that emerged in Europe from about 3000 cal BC onwards; the latter still form the norm in European and American contexts today, and our standard theories and methodologies are designed to uncover this specific form of gender….

This report presents the preliminary results of the 2017 study season at the archaeological site of Çatalhöyük, Central Anatolia. The aim of the 2017 season was to complete the study of all stone objects including stone beads from units selected for the final project publication volumes. In addition, non-priority units from contexts rich in ground stone material were targeted for analysis (e.g., Sp.639, TPC Area). A long tradition of scholarship in the social sciences focused on how collective identities form and change within and across human societies has identified two key modes by which actors identify with large groups.
