BECOMING GENDERED IN EUROPEAN PREHISTORY: WAS NEOLITHIC GENDER FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT

It is notable how little gender archaeology has been written for the European Neolithic, in contrast to the following Bronze Age. We cannot blame this absence on a lack of empirical data or on archaeologists’ theoretical naïveté. Instead, we argue that this absence reflects the fact that gender in this period was qualitatively different in form from the types of gender that emerged in Europe from about 3000 cal BC onwards; the latter still form the norm in European and American contexts today, and our standard theories and methodologies are designed to uncover this specific form of gender….

Tsoraki, C. 2017 (with contribution by M. Siebrecht). Ground Stone Technologies. Çatalhöyük 2017 Archive Report. Web publication.

This report presents the preliminary results of the 2017 study season at the archaeological site of Çatalhöyük, Central Anatolia. The aim of the 2017 season was to complete the study of all stone objects including stone beads from units selected for the final project publication volumes. In addition, non-priority units from contexts rich in ground stone material were targeted for analysis (e.g., Sp.639, TPC Area). The recorded material originates from the North, South, TPC and GDN Areas and from levels that span the occupation sequence at Neolithic Çatalhöyük. The type of contexts studied…

In particular, the portrayal of the historical evolution of the phenomenon of hospitality was prone to a great deal of rhetoric and little research; and in certain cases some of the assertions were manifestly wrong. The research underpinning the content of this book is essentially hermeneutical; that is investigating ways of engaging with and…

The Application of Collective Social Identification Theory to Archaeological Case Studies

A long tradition of scholarship in the social sciences focused on how collective identities form and change within and across human societies has identified two key modes by which actors identify with large groups. Relational identification refers to a process in which individuals identify with larger collectives based on direct networks of interactions or relationships, such as exchange or kin ties. In contrast, in categorical identification, individuals identify with more formal units such as political groups, religious organizations, or states, based on perceived similarities with others…
