The Nature of Archaeological Knowledge and Its Ontological Turns

This is a commentary to a discussion paper by Tim Flohr Sørensen: ‘The Two Cultures and a World Apart: Archaeology and Science at a new Crossroads’ on the perceived dangers of the science turn in archaeology. I argue that the history of archaeology has witnessed several such debates about the nature of archaeological knowledge, and that archaeology is situated between humanities and science. Over time archaeology has progressed in a constant dialectic between humanities and science, but in the process relative knowledge has been transformed into absolute knowledge (C14 dating, aDNA), and…

Intangible Heritage: A challenge to the authorised heritage discourse

The Unesco Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has significantly raised international and community awareness of the legitimacy of the concept of intangible heritage. Although, in raising this awareness, the Convention has not yet provided a framework that privileges the community/sub-national orientation of intangible heritage. This paper argues that definitions and ideas of heritage developed by national and international agencies such as UNESCO and ICOMOS need challenging and reconsidering. The dichotomy between tangible and intangible heritage needs…

Las Grandes Piedras de la Prehistoria: Sitios y Paisajes Megalíticos de Andalucía [The Large Stones of Prehistory: Megalithic Sites and Landscapes of Andalusia]

The megalithic phenomenon is one of the most exciting subjects of study in prehistory. The practice of monumentalising places of special significance by erecting large stones was begun by the first agrarian societies on our continent during the Neolithic period, approximately 7,000 years ago. It acquired such a social and ideological depth that it became one of the most geographically and temporally widespread cultural phenomena ever known in Europe. In Andalusia, the megalithic sites and landscapes express themselves with great richness and diversity, constituting an exceptional source of…
