The emergence of pottery in China: Recent dating of two early pottery cave sites in South China

The earliest pottery in East Asia, as is found in several cave sites in southern China, emerges in Upper Paleolithic contexts dating from the Last Glacial Maximum, ~20 Ka cal BP. The making of simple pottery vessels in Late Pleistocene East Asia also has been noted in eastern Siberia and Japan but not yet in the Central Plains of China. This paper summarizes the better-reported evidence for early pottery sites across the vast region of China south of the Yangtze River, providing details on two dating projects conducted in the cave sites of Xianrendong (Jiangxi Province) and Yuchanyan (Hunan…

A LATE NEOLITHIC «FISHING NET» FROM KURDISTAN, NORTHERN IRAQ?

In this paper we present a textile imprint observed on a prehistoric (Late Neolithic) sherd recovered from the site of Bestan-sur, Northern Iraq. Dated to ca 6500-6200 cal. BC, this represents one of the earliest textile imprints in the region. We discuss the fi nd and the type of textile. Rather tentatively we suggest it may have been used as a «fi shing net». Nový nález michelsbersko-baalberského horizontu ze středních Čech (39. stol. BC): hrob (?) z Chotýše, okr. Kolín; New Find of a Michelsberg-Baalberg Horizon from the Central Bohemia (39th century BC): a grave (?) from Chotýš, Kolín District

The feature from village of Chotýš is remarkable at first sight by the composition of its inventory, which rate him among the unique ensembles of Czech Chalcolithic. It falls within the period of turn of early Aeneolithic, i.e. interval of Jordanów Culture and early Funnel Beaker Culture. It is connected with a problem of Michelsberg Culture as well, resp. the form of its posture in the Early Chalcolithic. This part of Czech prehistory is evaluated inconsistently so far, due to the absence of finds. Every new find can contribute to the discussion fundamentally, which is the case of…

2017. Chaîne Opératoire, Ritmos Culturales e Identidad Técnica en Arqueología: la Noción de Tecnología en André Leroi-Gourhan. En Boletín del Laboratorio de Petrología y Conservación Cerámica, Vol. 3, Nº2, Año 3, pp. 68-81. ISSN Nº 1851-118X

Studia Eblaitica 3 (2017)

The aim of this new international journal is to contribute to developing the study of the interpretation and understanding of the ancient cultures of Syria, remaining as open as possible to the different methodologies and problems that characterize present-day research. Thanks to the generous policy of international collaboration pursued by the cultural authorities of the Syrian Arab Republic, the increase in archaeological research in Syria, particularly from the 1970s on, opened up a series of new perspectives on the study of ancient Syria. The discovery of the Royal Archives of Ebla was…
